GRAS (generally recognized as safe)
AstaREAL astaxanthin received it's official no-objection letter from the FDA on January 6, 2010 and is GRAS for use as an ingredient in the food categories of baked goods, beverages, cereals, chewing gum, coffee, tea, dairy product analogs, frozen dairy desserts and mixes, hard candy, milk products, processed fruits and fruit juices, processed vegetables and vegetable juices and soft candy at a use level to provide 0.1 milligram (mg) astaxanthin per serving.
AstaREAL astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family of natural pigments closely related to beta carotene, lycopene and lutein. It is a powerful natural biological antioxidant found most abundantly in seafood. It is what gives the pink and red color to salmon, shrimp and lobster. However, animals as well as humans depend on their diet to obtain astaxanthin and other carotenoids since neither can produce it themselves.
AstaREAL applications
Yogurt, Nutritional bars, Chocolate confections, Beverages and more.
Where does AstaREAL come from?
AstaREAL is obtained by cultivating the naturally occurring microalgae, haematococcus pluvialis, in unique closed-bio systems (BioDomeTM in Maui, Hawaii and stainless steel bioreactors in Gustavsberg, Sweden). These closed-bio systems control crucial parameters (heat-light-water) for growth and accumulation of astaxanthin. The closed-bio systems protect the microalgae from environmental contaminants and allow us to create the purest and most potent astaxanthin in the world.
